How does it work?

Connect your Apple device to your Quicklink Encoder’s Wi-Fi. Once the connection is set-up, you are ready to go. Your Mobile Data can be disabled if required. You will instantaneously  and automatically receive the encoder’s status data on your Apple device screen.

If you wish to monitor another Quicklink Encoder, select the new encoder’s Wi-Fi connection.

The Quicklink 1U Encoder FAQ

1. What is point to point?

A transmission from a single point encoder to a single point Playout Server both of which are Quicklink products.

 

2. Can I use the encoder with another company server?

Yes. To use the Quicklink 1U encoder you need to stream to a QMM server then this standards based RTSP stream can be decoded by any Standards based decoder.

 

3. Does the encoder work with Ka?

Yes. The Quicklink 1U encoder is optimised for the Ka Band Network. The encoder was developed with hundreds of hours of Ka testing. The Optimisation and Adaptive Mode on our advanced software ensures that this encoder offers reliability and robust performance by automatically compensating for any satellite degradation.

 

4. What is adaptive data rate?

When sending video over IP format, the video quality will adapt to the speed of the connection. The higher the speed, the better the quality of video. Faster Optimisation of bandwidth and adaptive Forward Error Correction algorithms ensures a robust performance on all connected network types.

 

5. What is H.264, H.265/HEVC? What is the difference? Is the encoder compatible?

  • H.264 is a codec, which is a method of compressing video data for transmission. For example if you try to transmit every pixel of every frame without some form of compression it would result in a large amount of data. H.264 is the broadcast standard for this.
  • H.265/HEVC provides more compression, at the same level of video output quality. For example if you have the equivalent video output quality for H.264 and H.265/HEVC, you will use less bandwidth with H265/HEVC as the data is more compressed.
  • H.265/HEVC is available as a software upgrade on this encoder.

 

6. How easy is it to use the Quicklink 1U encoder?

Once configured, a single button press will transmit to your selected destination using your input settings. The encoder can also be configured to auto transmit on startup , thereby no user interaction is needed to go live.

 

7. What types of Quicklink 1U Encoder are there?

There is currently one version.

 

8. Does the Quicklink 1U Encoder have different inputs?

The inputs are SD/HDSDI and HDMI.

 

9. What are the advantages of using the encoder in the field?

The UK general elections of 2015 took place this month in order to elect the 56th Parliament of the United Kingdom. Voting took place in all 650 parliamentary constituencies of the United Kingdom. SNG Broadcast based in Manchester was tasked to transmit high quality, low latency broadcasting of the ongoing live interviews and debates back to TV2 Denmark.

Using the Quicklink 1U Encoder, TV2 Denmark were able to produce for the first time a multi lingual news broadcast both in Danish and English for the UK elections. Spanning over 3 days, constant live broadcasts were transmitted with excellent quality over the Ka Band Network. Paul Bridgeman from SNG Broadcast explains;

“I used SD quality running over a 6MB line, in the adaptive mode to squeeze as much bandwidth as possible. The quality was really good and this would be comparable to any Ku service.”

One of the main valuable features for TV2 Denmark is that the Quicklink 1U Encoder has constant audio return communication (IFB). Paul Bridgeman from SNG Broadcast explains;

“This was very useful for our reporter and she relied on this heavily. The reporter was able to listen to her own language on the news channel over the comms to see what was happening around the UK. This was really valuable because it did not involve her being on the phone constantly to the newsroom and wondering what was going on”

During the 2015 elections SNG Broadcast were able to follow David Milliband and the Labour bus outside the Leeds City Museum, sending live footage back to TV2 Denmark via the satellite truck. On other days there was a permanent setup at Doncaster Racecourse, with a fibre link going to the election stage, which enabled multiple lives to be transmitted all night back to the main TV2 Denmark news channel.
